How to Cross Stitch For Beginners

Cross stitches are made in two steps: first stitch half crosses, then return to complete them.

1. Make the first diagonal (half-stitch) across each square.

You can start cross stitching rows or in columns.

2. Leave a short tail at the back and secure it under your first few stitches.

3. After a row of half-stitches, stitch back in the opposite direction to complete each X.

Finish off your stitching

Weave your needle under 4–5 stitches on the back, pull through, then trim the thread close.
